He ran away from home and joined a fair, where he was exhibited as a 'living corpse.' The Wanderer Erik traveled across Europe, learning magic, ventriloquism, and music. He became a master of illusion. He eventually reached Persia, where he served the Shah and built the palace of horrors. The Search for Love Erik always longed for love but was rejected by everyone, including his own mother. He came to believe that he was beyond humanity. His only solace was music. He hid his face behind a mask and his heart behind a wall of cruelty.

The Love That Consumed Him The Voice of the Angel Erik discovered Christine Daae and heard her sing. He felt an overwhelming love. He adopted the guise of the Angel of Music to win her trust. He taught her, protected her, and hoped to win her heart. The Jealousy When Christine fell in love with Raoul, Erik's jealousy turned to rage. He threatened to destroy the Opera if she refused him. He kidnapped her, imprisoned her, and gave her an ultimatum. His love was possessive and destructive. The Renunciation In the end, Christine's pity broke through his defenses. The Opera ghost was finally at rest. His skeleton now lies in the archives of the Opera, a testament to his tragic existence.
